Day 1:

“A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what's behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.”

2001: A Space Odyssey is a good representation of his quote from Kubrick because of the way the film incorporates dramatic music that flow well with the movements of the actors. In particular, the music fits perfectly when the astronauts or the spaceships are moving slowly through space. The music, which is very symphony like, does a good job portraying the importance of the space mission because of its' loud, grand, tone. Kubrick's quote is saying that when watching a film, the most important thing before analyzing the theme, tone, etc. of the film is to make the audience feel certain moods and feelings that result from the scene, without thinking too much about why they are feeling those particular feelings. This way, the film has more of a significant impact on the audience and makes them remember the film and whether they enjoyed it or not. Like a musical piece, a film must flow from scene to scene flawlessly, making the audience's feelings rapidly change depending on what is happening. The audience may at first feel sad, then happy, and then suddenly angry. The flowing of emotions is what really connects the film into one final work or symphony. The clip I took from the beginning of the film shows space and the different ships and satellites floating peacefully along. The music paired with this scene shows the connection between the visual and audio that make the film seem to fit together so seamlessly.
