We discussed in class how the nominations for the best film were chosen and voted for. We also discussed the criteria for a movie that is being nominated for a certain section. I think it is unfair for the voters to be selected from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences because they don't represent the general public who are actually the ones who pay money to choose what movies they watch and what they think about them. If there wasn't an audience, then there wouldn't be a point for a movie. The films nominated tend to repeat themselves, showing little diversity. If the general public nominated films, then there might be a wider variety of films selected to be voted on. My favorite category from the Oscars was the best short film animated and best short film live action. I didn't even know there was such categories, but I really enjoyed the little animated bits that you usually see come before the actual film in a movie theater. These shorts are really cute and get me pumped for the actual movie. I like the way the directors of these short films work with such a short time frame, but still come up with something that is both entertaining and gets their point across.
