Film Review of Metropolis

The scene “Maria’s Transformation” from the silent film, Metropolis uses realistic technology that is much more advanced than other silent films during this time period. In this scene, one of the main characters, Maria, has been captured by Rotwang who is attempting to clone her into a robot. Maria is strapped to an examination table with various tubes and wires going in all directions. As she is transformed into the robot, lights blink rapidly, making the scene seem more exciting and engaging to the audience. The concept of robots during the time of this film was very skeptical to many, so the scene may have appealed to the audience because of its new age feel and high tech props. This idea of changing a person into a robot may have pleasing to film makers and directors creating films during this time. They may have reused this scene in their films, making the idea of a robot less bizarre. While the real Maria is held captive in the attic, the robot Maria is used to stir an uprising in the worker population. Dramatic irony is used because while the audience members know that there is a fake Maria, the workers and other characters don’t realize the difference initially.
