Le Voyage Dans la Lun (A Trip to the Moon) Film Review
Georges Méliès's film, "Le Voyage Dans la Lun" (A Trip to the Moon) wonderfully captures the story of a group of scientists completing a voyage to the moon. Despite only being 11 minutes long, Le Voyage Dans la Lun easily keeps an audience entertained by incorporating suspense and conflict into a well-written plot. Méliès uses interesting screen shots and visuals that portray the main focus of the film, a journey to the moon.
Set in a university classroom, a group of professors watch a presentation from a scientist pursuing a trip to the moon. Upon suggesting a trip to the moon, the ambitious astrologer is bombarded with criticisms from the other professors, condemning his trip as radical and improbable. The astrologer later convinces the other professors to support his trip to the moon, and they quickly build a space shuttle to take them to the moon. Upon landing on the moon, the professors explore the moon’s uncharted territory. The professors are attacked by the savage inhabitants of the moon, and forced to flee back to their space shuttle. They hastily head back to Earth where they share their newfound discoveries with the other professors.
Méliès's use of the twentieth centuries’ newest filming techniques, like editing skills and superimposed images, gave the film a new century feel. Costumes, props, and backdrops fit the plot well, and improved the appearance of the film. The short film length and the simple plot, allows the audience to easily follow the storyline and not get confused with excess information. Georges Méliès's film, "Le Voyage Dans la Lun" (A Trip to the Moon) is an entertaining short film that tells a classic story with added intrigue.
