The 1913 film, “Suspense” directed by Lois Weber, is a popular short story involving important filming techniques with the various shots as well as classic characters like the damsel in distress and conquering prince. Weber’s film is an influential piece that can be considered a “must see” because of its’ short length and quick paced plot. The film involves popular filming methods that can be seen in modern day films, as well as films created during this time. Weber’s use of an easy to identify protagonist and antagonist helps the members of the audience quickly pick out the different characters’ and their roles in the plot.
The plot of the film is a classic one. The first scene begins with a maid quitting her job working in the main household. She spies on the mother and the baby through the keyhole. During this scene, the shot used, a keyhole shot, allows the audience to view the scene through the keyhole that the maid was looking through. This makes the audience feel like the maid, secretive and cautious. The film continues with the maid leaving the key under the mat and the women’s husband calling from work. An interesting filming technique used in this scene is the split screen that shows the maid, the husband, and the women onscreen but in separate locations. This filming technique has been used in modern films as well as older films. The plot thickens when the maid passes a tramp on the road leading away from the household. The tramp is interested with the house and begins poking around. The woman calls her husband at work who quickly steals a car and races back to the household. A classic car chase ensues, when the owner of the stolen car gathers a group of policemen and they drive after their criminal. Interesting shots are used in the car chase, like when the side view window of the car is used to look behind at the policemen in the car behind the husbands’. Extra suspense is used when the scene continues to switch from the mother at home and the car chase. Back at the house, the woman and her baby hide in the upstairs bedroom while the tramp travels up the stairs towards her hiding place. At the last minute, the policemen and husband arrive and startle the tramp. They capture the criminal and the wife is reunited with her husband the hero.

My name is Megan DeLorenzo, and I am a student at Academic Magnet High School. This page contains my assignments for the Film and Fiction class I am taking this year. Throughout this semester my appreciation for film has grown, and I have noticed many changes in the ways I watch and critique films. I have been introduced to several influential directors like Orsen Welles, Roman Polansky, and Alfred Hitchcock. The films created by these directors that I have seen throughout this class have widened my understanding of film, showing me different film techniques and their purposes/effects on an audience. Welles's Citizen Kane showed me different camera angles, and a unique use of lighting. With Polansky's Chinatown I noticed the intricate use of symbolism and dialogue. Finally, with Hitchcock's Vertigo and Psycho, I saw powerful camera angles, a unique use of sound, and an unseen Hitchcockesque ending.

The film Warrior Road, created by Brad Jayne, tells the story of Joseph, a preacher's son. Joseph is an aspiring writer who is extremely shy and quiet. Joseph and his two friends partake in a series of distasteful acts that include but are not limited to, drinking, smoking, doing drugs, stealing, and cussing. Basically, they are your average troubled teenagers. Joseph and his partners decide one night to steal from a drunken bartender. The successful robbery encourages the three to continue robbing drunks at parties. After carrying on with this for a while, they take a road trip through Myrtle Beach, and get in a fight with another group of punks. All the while, Joseph is finding himself, and is finding how to be strong and stand out when he is feeling shy. The journey allows Joseph to discover his true strength and courage, that he feels he lacks in his character. I think the movie has some of the most beautiful camera angles and scenes. The scenes in Myrtle Beach, Folly Beach, and around the coastal Charleston area are crystal clear and make the movie all the better. I also enjoyed the music, which fit perfectly with where the movie was being shot. I did think however, that there was extremely little dialogue, and sometimes the music would jump straight from one song to the next without any dialogue at all in between. There was one scene where Joseph was sitting on the beach with the bare trees, and the African American preacher with the suspenders and trumpet came up to him, and in this scene music is playing in the background. I think the scene would have more impact if it was just dialogue without the background music. Another aspect of the film that I did like was the sequence starting at 25.30 minutes was really well put together. It did a great job explaining Joseph's background while simultaneously showing the continuation of the three boys' robbing spree. I think the plot line could have been better established towards the beginning of the film, however overall I really did enjoy the film, and would definitely recommend others to watch it.

The controversy over modern movies being filmed with digital techniques versus the traditional, photo chemical way has become more heated within the last few years. I think that it should be decided by the movie creator whether to pick digital or photo chemical. The photo chemical way of filming takes longer and costs more, however the amount of time and effort make the final product all the more remarkable and memorable. With the introduction of digital movie making, more options for creativity were created. “It’s magic now. It’s just, whatever you can think of, you can do, and that’s the whole idea" says George Lucas, a popular film producer and screen writer. With digital computing, movie makers are now able to create their own image of what the scene should look like, down to the exact set color and appearance. This is superior to anything that could be done with film, but at the same time it loses a sort of skill that was required when creating a film scene. I think digital is superior to photo chemical, however, photo chemical should not be completely forgotten. With the option of choosing digital or photo chemical, digital filming can be improved and photo chemical can continued to be used.

Another reason the film is revolutionary, is that the main character, May, pretends to be blind for most of the film. It is only until the end, that the audience learns that she wasn't actually blind. It is revolutionary because the director did such a great job keeping the audience from even gathering the slightest hint that the girl was not really blind, making it an even bigger surprise. A scene in

Daggers that portrays the revolutionary theme, is the very beginning when it summarizes the war with the Tang Dynasty. The soldiers at the beginning talk about the rebel army and their attempts to squash the threat. The next scene introduces May, the blind girl, whom is not really blind. The scene is very beautiful with the many colors and authentic Chinese traditional clothing styles.
